Biomechanical Assessment

A biomechanical assessment is essential for seeing how you walk or run and for evaluating how this can be causing any pain and problems.

We begin by taking a detailed history of your painful condition, its location, onset, duration, symptoms and any pattern. Any previous injuries are also taken into consideration including any surgery that may have altered your biomechanics.

We then evaluate your joint ranges of motion, muscle strength/tightness, joint and bone architecture (clinically). The alignment of limbs and the relationship between joints is also examined.

Having assessed the structural aspect we then look closely at how you use it all. This is done by watching you walking or running and recording this digitally. We are then able to play this back at very slow motion and see in detail any issues relating to your walking or running gait. This also provides an ideal way of demonstrating to you what may or may not be happening.

Finally we use pressure plate analysis to examine how you load your body weight through you feet both while standing still and while walking or running. This technology is especially useful in helping to diagnose forefoot pain and 1st toe (big toe) joint pains. It can also show potential pressure points which can be problematic for diabetic patients and those suffering from Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Following biomechanical assessment we are able to create a detailed treatment plan which may include:

  • Strapping/taping
  • Footwear recommendation
  • Stretching/strengthening regime
  • Instigation of Orthotic therapy where indicated
  • Onward referral to other health care professionals (such as Physiotherapists, Sports Physicians, Sports Massage Therapist, Osteopaths, GP etc)
